Jesus and the Gatekeepers

Let’s talk about something we don’t always associate with Jesus: anger.

Yes, Jesus is gentle and full of grace, but he also gets furious when people block the path between potential believers, those who need help, and God. Especially when those people claim to represent him.

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.”

Matthew 23:13

That’s not polite frustration. That’s divine rage. Jesus isn’t mad at sinners or skeptics…he’s mad at gatekeepers.

A friend once told me about a time their family went to a church-run food pantry. They were low on groceries and low on options, where so many of us have been at one time or another. Volunteers helped load boxes of food into the car, but before they were allowed to drive away, someone from the church stepped in.

“Wait. We need to pray with you first.”

It wasn’t an offer. It was a condition. The message was clear: you don’t get the food until we get to pray over you.

In that moment, the gift turned into a hostage situation. Not one of violence, but of spiritual coercion. You want help? Fine. But not without a little Jesus sales pitch first. And honestly, that kind of thing makes me understand exactly why Jesus flipped tables.

When we make grace conditional, when we inject our faith like a toll to be paid, we’re not acting like Jesus. We’re acting like the Pharisees. Or even like his own disciples, who tried to turn away little children or silence the shouting blind man on the road. And every time, Jesus rebuked them.

He said, “Let them come.” He said, “What do you want me to do for you?”

He did not say, “First let’s make sure you’re ready to believe the right things.”

Jesus didn’t gatekeep grace. He gave it. Freely. And he got mad at anyone who tried to block the door.

So if you’ve ever been made to feel like you had to jump through hoops to be worthy of help…

If you’ve ever been told that love came with strings attached…

If religion ever left a sour taste in your mouth that made you want to walk away forever…

Hear this: That wasn’t Jesus. That was someone standing in the way.
