I’m furious. Beyond words. While millions of Americans watch this government shutdown drag on, the Trump administration has gutted the very people responsible for protecting children with disabilities.
Hundreds of staff in the Department of Education, specifically those overseeing special education, were laid off. The people who enforce the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), who ensure $15 billion in federal support reaches states, classrooms, and families, are gone.
Let that sink in.
Kids who rely on individualized learning plans. Parents who depend on advocates to make sure their child isn’t ignored. Teachers who need guidance and funding to serve students with disabilities. All left stranded.
And Trump has the gall to blame Democrats.
No, this isn’t about “Democrats blocking funding.”
Republicans control every branch of government right now, the executive, the legislative, and the judiciary, and they still chose to weaponize a shutdown to fire the people who serve the most vulnerable students in America.
This isn’t fiscal responsibility. It’s moral rot.
This isn’t smaller government. It’s sabotage.
They say the Department of Health and Human Services might take over special education programs…as if you can just toss IDEA compliance to another agency like a lost suitcase. That’s not how education law works. That’s not how human lives work.
This isn’t a policy dispute. It’s cruelty masquerading as governance.
If this makes you angry, good. It should. Because what’s happening right now isn’t normal. It’s not acceptable. And it’s not just politics. It’s a direct attack on children who already have to fight for every ounce of access and support they deserve.
